Women’s History Month 2023

Date

April 2024

In celebration of Women’s History Month, our class engaged in a week-long exploration of courageous, intelligent, and history-making women. We began by reading Shark Lady by Jess Keating, the inspiring story of Eugenie Clark, a pioneering marine biologist who challenged stereotypes and fearlessly followed her passion for ocean life. After identifying key character traits that described Eugenie—such as brave, curious, persistent, and kind—students added them to our word wall as inspiration for our learning community.

To further affirm the diversity and strength within ourselves, we read I Am Me by Tristan Towns and Lacy Howard. This led to a discussion about our own unique traits, followed by self-portraits and personal reflections that helped students connect their own identities to the broader theme of honoring individuals for who they are and what they bring to the world.

Midweek, we revisited the purpose of Women’s History Month and began examining influential women across various fields, including science, sports, activism, the arts, and leadership. Each student selected a woman to research—some worked independently while others collaborated with peers. Students gathered facts using books, classroom materials, and age-appropriate digital resources.

The culminating project involved designing a creative tribute poster that highlighted their selected figure. These posters included key facts, character traits, illustrations, and thoughtful reflections. Through this process, students demonstrated their ability to research, synthesize information, and communicate ideas meaningfully.

Above all, this unit emphasized that we can learn from the beautifully brilliant women who have shaped our world—and that every student has the power to make an impact too.
