“Waves of Change” was a dynamic, student-centered interdisciplinary unit I designed to celebrate Women’s History Month through the lens of ocean conservation. Rooted in science, literacy, character education, and the arts, this study spotlighted the powerful impact of women who have led the charge in protecting our oceans—from marine biologists to grassroots activists. Inspired by my own deep connection to the sea as a longtime ocean lifeguard at our local state beaches on Long Island, I sought to instill both knowledge and a sense of stewardship in my students.
Throughout the unit, students explored the lives and contributions of women ocean advocates, engaged in hands-on marine science investigations, and developed their voices through persuasive writing and creative expression. The study culminated in a classroom exhibition that showcased their research, original artwork, and messages to the world about why protecting the ocean matters. It was a powerful opportunity to merge academic learning with personal passion and global awareness.
