STEM: Piloting a Hydroponic Program
Teaching Sustainability and Future Farming Practices
Date
April 2023
As part of my commitment to hands-on, future-focused learning, I piloted a 5-week hydroponic program for students in grades 6–8 that explored the principles of sustainability and innovative farming practices. This interdisciplinary initiative combined science, environmental awareness, and engineering to engage students in meaningful, real-world problem-solving.
Throughout the program, students investigated the environmental impact of traditional agriculture and compared it with hydroponic farming as a sustainable alternative. They explored concepts such as water conservation, nutrient cycles, plant biology, and food security.
The program culminated in the collaborative design and construction of a fully functioning hydroponic system. Working in teams, students applied what they had learned to build, test, and maintain their system, growing leafy greens and herbs in a soil-free environment. This hands-on experience not only reinforced academic content but also promoted teamwork, innovation, and environmental stewardship.
By the end of the five weeks, students had not only gained knowledge of sustainable agriculture but also developed a deeper sense of responsibility for the future of our planet and their role in shaping it.
